In this tutorial I will show you how I made my Rock On artwork and a few techniques to make abstract shapes and light effects. We will also use a 3D rendering and stock images.
The most important thing to keep in mind when you start working on something like this is the color scheme. I used the same colors of the model’s guitar, clothing and hair. That will make everything blend better.

Resources needed for this tutorial:
Model, smoke brushes, sparkle brushes, rush brushes, 3D render, smexy patterns, extremely abstract brushes, sparks stock
Step 1

Create a new document in photoshop: width 1066px, Height 1500px. Get the Gradient Tool (G) and draw a Radial Gradient on the upper part of the canvas. The colors for the gradient are: dark gray: 545454 and light gray: 959595.

Subtract the model from the original photo and paste her into your document (I will refer to this layer as “girl layer”). Scale it down and use the Levels Editor (CTRL+L or Image>Adjustments>Levels) to increase the contrast, also increase Saturation (Ctrl+U) to make the image more vivid.

Download the Smexy Patterns, and pick pattern 12, (3 pixels white) and paint with the Pattern Stamp Tool (S) on a new layer between the model and the gray background, use opacity 25% and a soft edge brush. Create a fading effect on the pattern you just created using a Layer Maks and a radial gradient. You can see the result in the image below.

I used a pattern adjustment layer instead of the pattern stamp tool to paint the lines pattern but the result is exactly the same.
Step 2

Add the 3D render on a new layer below the model and above the pattern layer. Add an Outer Glow effect size 158 pixels and range 68%, leave all the rest of the settings to their default values.

Also add a Gradient Overlay with the settings like in the image below. The rainbow gradient is in the Spectrums file, it comes with Photoshop.

This is the result after applying the effects to the 3D render. I also used a Hues/Saturation Adjustment Layer to modify the colors.

Step 2b

Open the sparks image, paste it over the hand that plays the guitar and rotate it about 75 degrees to the left (counterclockwise) . Increase Contrast and Saturation.

As you can see above I erased part of the sparks that are right over the hand because I want to make it look as this sparks come from behind the girl’s hand.
We only want to see the sparks but not the black background and because this image has a solid black background, you simply have to change the Blending Mode to Screen and everything that is black will disappear leaving only the sparks visible.

Step 3 – Make your own abstract brushes

On this step I will show you how I made the abstract shapes that you can see on the image below using default photoshop brushes and filters.

Shape 1-2 – Warp tool

The shape that I marked as 1 and 2 are made using soft brushes and the warp tool. I saw on other tutorials that other people use the elliptical marquee tool to make shapes like that but the problem of that technique is that it’s limited to circular shapes only. With the warp tool, the possibilities are endless. So, this is how to do it.
Use a soft circular brush and paint on a new layer a few dots randomly but not too far from one-another. Set the brush opacity between 30-40% and paint different size dots, you can also change the opacity of each stroke. You should have something like this, obviously the shape doesn’t matter:

Once you have it, go to Edit>Transform>Warp or Ctrl+T – right click and choose Warp. Once you choose the warp tool, you will see a selection mark across your shape that divides your shape in 9 areas. Notice that there are 2 different anchor points: black solid round anchors and hollow square anchor points on the four corners. Click and drag those anchor points on any direction you want and make your shape. You can also click and drag the surface between the anchor points to move the entire surface.

There is one thing you have to keep in mind when you use this technique; do not apply the warp tool twice on the same shape or to a shape that has already been warped because you will loose quality.
The image below is not the one that is in the original PSD file because you cannot reproduce the same shape twice.

To make the dots on the edge of shape 1 you have to draw a Path along the edge of the shape using the Pen Tool (P) and stroke the path with the Brush Tool. But before you stroke the path you have to change the settings of the brush. Open the brushes window by pressing F5 and set brush settings as in the image below. On Shape Dynamics you must leave the Size to 0 and the Control to Pen Pressure, otherwise all the dots will be the same size.

Once you have all the sittings set, click ok and close the Brushes window. With the pen tool still selected, right click and choose Stroke Path from the drop-down list, select Brush and activate Simulate Pressure.

Shape 3 – Polar Coordinates

The shape number 3 is very easy to make using the Polar Coordinates filter and a few straight lines.
Grab the Brush Tool (B) and draw a some vertical lines like in the image below. To make them perfectly straight, hold down the Shift key while you draw. I used a 4 pixels brush and hardness 100% but you should use a 2px brush for a better result. When you have the lines erase both ends with a soft brush to get a fading effect.

Now, go to Filter>Distort>Polar Coordinates, choose Rectangular to Polar and click OK. When the effect is applied, apply it again by pressing Ctrl+F or go to Filter>Polar Coordinates. You should have something similar to the image below, now you just have to flip it vertically.

Step 4 – Light

Let’s start with the light effects. We have already applied an outer glow to the 3D render but we need more lights here. Make a new layer below the girl layer and above the 3D render and take a soft brush about 450-500 pixels. Set Flow and Opacity to 100% and paint two big dots. I used this colors: Pink – ff2dda, Blue – 17ddfb. On the center of the pink image I made a second stroke with a 200px brush, brush flow 50% and color cdcaa1. Set the Blending Mode of this layer to Color Dodge (Add).
Put the lights on places indicated in the image below. (I hid the other elements so you can see it better.)

We are not done yet, make a new layer above the layer you made on the previous step and use a big soft brush to paint a few more colors like in the image below. Try not to reach the edges of the canvas. Use Gaussian Blur if you want to achieve a very smooth transition between the colors.

You can use whatever colors you like, I used this ones because I like how they blend with the rest of the colors in the image. Don’t worry about the exact values, just try to get something similar. Set the blending mode of the layer to Screen and Opacity to 50%. This additional colors will make the image a bit brighter and colorful. This is the before and after.

Open the extremely abstract brushs pack and use any brush that you like on a new layer above the two colored lights that you just made but behind the girl. Again, I hid the rest of the elements so you can see it better.

Add the smoke to the right hand and the sparkles on new layers above all the other layers.

Now we have to add a shadow on the floor. We are going to cast a simple shadow using a soft brush. Make a new layer under the girl layer and use a big soft brush and a dark gray color. Make a stroke and than go to Edit>Free Transform or press Ctrl+T. Scale down the shape on the vertical plane.

Use the rush brushes pack to add that weird effect on the boot.

I also used a splash brush on the head to make it a bit more abstract.
